This tune was composed by PM Donald Shaw Ramsay (1919-1998) at the end of World War II to celebrate the crossing of the Rhine by the first Allied unit as they advanced into Germany. Of note, PM Ramsay was distinguished to be the youngest Pipe Major ever in the British Army. After leaving his service with the Highland regiment he joined up with the Edinburgh police department and was instrumental in helping the Edinburgh Police Pipe Band to become world champions. While on duty with the Edinburgh police department, PM Ramsay was shot and subsequently retired from service, later would become the Pipe Major of the San Francisco Pipe band, and sometime after that he became the Pipe Major of the InverGordon Distillery Band.
