'The Wearing of the Green' is a traditional Irish street ballad that was thought to have been composed around the year 1798 when the 'United Irishmen', whose official color was green, rebelled against the rule of the English. The British authorities declared that it was illegal for anyone to wear a green shamrock in their hat, the penalty being death by hanging for displaying the revolutionary insignia.
There have been several variations of this tune, with the best known version from Dion Boucicault's play, "Arragh na Pogue", or the 'Wicklow Wedding', performed in the United States in 1864.
